It's All In The Purr
All cats will use their "voices" to communicate. Their cat chat is their way of doing just that. To find clues to your pet's feelings you need to pay attention to what they are "talking" about. Part of the clue involves observing difference in frequency, pace, pitch and intensity.
A frightened or anxious kitty will have quicker then normal meows. A relaxed and confident kitty will tend to have slower then normal meows. Of course this is only one way they "talk" to you.
Unique to the cat family and another way they talk to you is the purr. A content kitty will purr. Some cat behaviorist scientist believe that cats purr when they are ready to be sociable.
Keep Close Watch
Don't oversimplify the purr talk. It could also signal a kitty that is in great pain, nervous or feeling uneasy about something. It all needs to be taken into the current context.
Their tails are a very accurate way to ascertain what their true feelings are. The way they are moving their tail can tell you a lot. For example, taking into account that your kitty isn't a dog then you shouldn't expect the same messages a dog would convey by certain actions to mean the same thing if your cat does them. Your cat wagging his tail means something very different then a dog doing the same thing. In fact it signals confusion or maybe annoyance when your kitty does it.
